What Is BerqWP and How Does It Speed Up WordPress?

brown tortoise on brown sand

Every WordPress site owner eventually hits the same wall. The site feels slow. PageSpeed Insights hands back a score in the 40s or 50s. The obvious fix is a caching plugin, so one gets installed. The score climbs a little. Then it stalls.

It stalls because caching only solves one part of the problem. A cached page still loads every stylesheet the theme ships with, still runs every script before the page becomes interactive, and still sends full-size images to phones that can only display a fraction of those pixels. Fixing all of that means adding more plugins, and every plugin added to fix speed is one more thing running on the same server that was already struggling.

That is the contradiction at the center of WordPress performance. The standard fix asks the server to work harder in order to make the site faster.

BerqWP is a WordPress speed plugin built around a different idea: do the heavy work somewhere else.

TL;DR: BerqWP is an all-in-one WordPress speed plugin. Instead of running optimizations on your hosting, it processes pages on its own cloud servers and stores the finished result on your site as cache. Critical CSS, image conversion, JavaScript handling, and CDN delivery are all included. A free version runs entirely on your own server with no account needed.

Why Optimizing on Your Own Server Falls Short

Generating critical CSS means loading the page in a headless browser and working out which styles are visible above the fold. Converting an image to AVIF means decoding the original and re-encoding it with a far more expensive compression algorithm. Deciding which JavaScript can safely be delayed means parsing the whole page.

None of this is trivial work. On a dedicated server with room to spare, it is fine. On shared hosting, where dozens of sites share the same CPU, it competes directly with serving actual visitors. The optimization plugin becomes part of the load it was supposed to reduce.

This is why so many WordPress sites end up in a strange middle state: technically optimized, with a stack of plugins doing their jobs, but not actually fast.

How BerqWP Approaches It Differently

BerqWP’s core idea is simple. The site’s server should serve pages. Everything else should happen elsewhere.

When BerqWP is active, the plugin sends two things to BerqWP’s servers: the page URL and the plugin settings. BerqWP’s cloud fetches the page, runs every optimization, and writes the finished HTML back to the site as cache. From that point on, the web server delivers the cached page directly, before WordPress or PHP even wake up.

No optimization work touches the site’s hosting. The server’s only job is to hand over a file that has already been prepared.

A few details make this work well in practice.

Instant cache. While the full optimization is running in the cloud, BerqWP creates a lightweight placeholder cache right away. The first visitor after a cache flush is not stuck waiting on an unoptimized page.

Automatic invalidation. Publish a post, update a product, change a menu, and BerqWP detects it and rebuilds the relevant cache on its own. After a manual flush, it crawls the sitemap and warms every page back up.

Cloud-side compatibility patches. When a popular theme or plugin update breaks something in how pages get optimized, BerqWP can fix it at the cloud level. Sites keep working without waiting for a plugin update.

What BerqWP Optimizes on a WordPress Page

Each item on this list addresses a specific reason WordPress pages load slowly.

Critical CSS is the small subset of styles needed to render what is visible on the first screen. BerqWP generates it per page and inlines it, so the browser can paint immediately instead of waiting for the full stylesheet.

JavaScript delay holds scripts back until the visitor interacts with the page. That clears the way for the first render and is one of the biggest levers for mobile scores.

Lazy loading defers images, background images, YouTube embeds, and Google Maps until they are about to enter the viewport.

LCP preload identifies the largest above-the-fold image and tells the browser to fetch it first, which directly improves Largest Contentful Paint.

Font optimization prioritizes visible fonts and defers the rest.

A global CDN delivers images, CSS, JavaScript, and fonts from 300+ locations, so assets arrive from somewhere physically close to the visitor.

How BerqWP Handles Images

Images are usually the heaviest part of a WordPress page, and they are where the cloud approach makes the most visible difference.

WordPress stores whatever gets uploaded. A 3MB photo from a phone stays a 3MB photo, and every visitor downloads it, whether they are on a 27-inch monitor or a phone screen that shows a fraction of those pixels.

BerqWP handles images in two layers.

Convert Images to WebP turns uploaded JPEGs and PNGs into WebP, which is typically 25 to 35 percent smaller at the same visual quality. The originals in the media library are never touched.

Fluid Images takes this further. Each image is analyzed for its actual container size on the page, and BerqWP generates variants at multiple widths on its cloud servers. A visitor on a phone gets a small version. A visitor on a retina display gets a sharper one. The format is chosen per visitor too: AVIF for browsers that support it, WebP as a fallback, the original as a last resort. All of it is served from BerqWP’s image CDN, so no conversion or resizing ever runs on the site’s server.

Doing this by hand with srcset attributes and manual conversions is technically possible. Almost nobody does it, because it is tedious and easy to get wrong.

BerqWP’s Four Optimization Modes

Not every site tolerates aggressive optimization equally. A brochure site can delay every script without anyone noticing. A WooCommerce store with a live cart cannot.

BerqWP has four presets that control how CSS and JavaScript are handled.

ModeCSSJavaScriptBest for
StandardBrowser defaultBrowser defaultMaximum compatibility
SmartAsynchronousAsynchronousStable performance
BlazeAsynchronousDelayedMost sites
TurboDelayedDelayedHighest scores

The sensible approach is to start with Turbo and step down if something breaks. Sandbox Mode makes this safe. Append ?berqwp to any URL and the optimized version loads for you alone, while real visitors keep seeing the current live page. Menus, forms, sliders, and checkout can all be tested without any risk.

Which WordPress Sites BerqWP Works With

BerqWP is used across blogs, business sites, WooCommerce stores, and sites built with Elementor or Divi. Multilingual setups with WPML, Polylang, or TranslatePress are supported, with cache kept in sync across language versions. WooCommerce cart and checkout pages stay uncached so shoppers always see live data.

It works alongside Cloudflare, including a direct Cloudflare Edge Cache integration, and alongside the Redis Object Cache plugin with no configuration.

The one real constraint is that BerqWP has to be the only frontend speed plugin on the site. Two caching plugins compete over the same HTML and produce unpredictable results, so BerqWP deactivates known conflicts like WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache, and NitroPack on activation.

BerqWP’s Free Version

Not every site needs cloud processing, and BerqWP does not require it.

The free version runs entirely on the site’s own server. No account, no license key, nothing sent to BerqWP. It includes full-page caching, all four optimization modes, lazy loading, LCP preload, URL prefetching, prerender on hover, and font optimization. On Apache, cache rules are written to .htaccess automatically so pages are served at the web server level.

What it does not include is the cloud work: critical CSS generation, WebP and AVIF conversion, Fluid Images, the CDN, and Web Vitals Analytics. Those depend on BerqWP’s infrastructure.

For a site that mainly needs solid caching, the free version is a complete answer. For a site that needs images converted, critical CSS generated, and assets served from a CDN, that is where BerqWP comes in.
